Multiple schools in North Carolina announce closures for Thursday

NORTH CAROLINA — As frigid temperatures and lingering icy conditions persist in the wake of recent winter weather across North Carolina, several public school systems have finalized schedules for Thursday, January 29, 2026. Districts are reporting a mix of delays, remote learning days, and continued closures due to hazardous roads and below-freezing temperatures.

Charlotte Region and Surrounding Areas

  • Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will operate on a two-hour delay Thursday morning. Bus pick-ups and school start times will begin two hours later than usual, and before-school programs are also delayed; after-school programs and activities are expected to run on their normal schedule.
  • Other districts in the Charlotte region are updating schedules based on weather forecasts and road conditions, with some considering remote learning or further adjustments as needed.

Western and Central North Carolina

  • Catawba County Schools have indicated that remote instruction may continue through the end of the week as secondary roads remain unsafe — though specific plans for Thursday are chiefly oriented around remote learningif conditions do not improve.

Other District Planning

  • Many districts across the state had already reported closures, delays, or remote learning days earlier in the week in response to ice, snow and black ice concerns. These include various remote learning days and delayed start times in counties such as Wake, Johnston, Chapel Hill-Carrboro, Franklin, Granville, Harnett, Lee, Northampton, Warren, and Wayne, though exact updated plans for Thursday may vary by district and are continuing to be announced.

Statewide Weather and Safety Factors

School officials across North Carolina have cited ongoing concerns over icy roads, refreezing conditions overnight, and hazardous travel, which have influenced scheduling decisions throughout the week and into Thursday. Families are encouraged to check directly with their local school district for the latest, most specific schedule updates.
