INDIANA — Two people were killed Monday night in a crash involving a semi-truck on State Road 1 in Wayne County, according to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.
The crash occurred after 8:15 p.m. in the 9600 block of North State Road 1, authorities said.
A preliminary investigation found that a 65-year-old man from Union City was driving a semi-truck northbound on SR-1. At the same time, a 29-year-old man from Cincinnati was driving a Kia Optima southbound and attempted to pass another semi-truck.
According to investigators, the driver of the Kia was unable to avoid a collision and struck the oncoming semi-truck head-on. The impact caused the semi-truck to leave the roadway and come to rest in a ditch.
Two passengers in the Kia were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities are being withheld pending positive identification and notification of next of kin.
Authorities said it is unclear whether either the Kia driver or the semi-truck driver was injured. The crash remains under investigation.
