TENNESSEE — Forecasters are watching a developing weather system that could influence weather conditions across parts of Tennessee this weekend, though officials say it is still too early to determine whether the state will see winter weather impacts.
According to the National Weather Service, the system is expected to move through the region Saturday and Sunday. Meteorologists say confidence is highest in the timing of the system and the potential for strong winds, while confidence remains lower regarding snow or ice impacts in Tennessee.
Forecast models show several possible scenarios. One scenario would bring warmer air into the region, resulting primarily in rain with limited winter precipitation. Another potential track could allow colder air to remain in place, increasing the chance for snow or mixed precipitation, particularly in higher elevations. A third scenario would shift the storm farther east, keeping most impacts out of Tennessee altogether.
The National Weather Service emphasized that the final track of the storm will determine whether Tennessee experiences any winter weather impacts. Officials noted that snowfall and ice forecasts typically become more accurate within a few days of a storm.
Currently, the GFS model pictured above is being the most generous with snow totals showing over a foot of snow in eastern Tennessee.
