VIRGINIA — Forecasters are monitoring a developing weather system that could impact Virginia this weekend, with uncertainty remaining as models continue to refine the storm’s track.

According to the National Weather Service, the system is expected to affect the region Saturday and Sunday. While confidence is highest in the timing of the storm and the potential for strong winds—particularly near coastal and marine areas—confidence is lower regarding snowfall and ice impacts inland.

Forecast scenarios vary. One possible storm track could bring warmer air into parts of Virginia, leading to more rain with the potential for mixed precipitation, including snow or ice, especially farther inland. Another scenario could support colder conditions and allow for more widespread snow. A third scenario would keep the storm farther offshore, significantly limiting impacts across the state.

Forecasters also highlighted the potential for marine hazards along Virginia’s coast, including large waves and the possibility of coastal flooding. Strong winds are expected to be a primary concern regardless of the storm’s final path.

Currently, the GFS model pictured above is being the most generous with snow totals showing over two feet of snow in southeastern Virginia and several inches across the state.

It’s important to note that this is just a model run and not a forecast. Things can and will change.

The National Weather Service emphasized that the final track of the storm will determine whether Virginia experiences winter weather impacts and how significant those impacts may be. Officials noted that it is still too early to provide specific snow or ice accumulation forecasts, adding that the most accurate winter weather predictions are typically made within a few days of a storm.

Residents are encouraged to monitor forecast updates closely as the weekend approaches and remain prepared for changing weather conditions.
