Schools across Oklahoma announce closures for Tuesday

OKLAHOMA — A weekend winter storm that delivered snow, ice and dangerously cold temperatures across Oklahoma has prompted widespread school closures and remote learning plans for Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2026. Icy roadways and lingering hazardous travel conditions remain the primary reasons districts are canceling in-person instruction and modifying schedules for students and staff.

Widespread K-12 Closures

Many public school districts across the state will not hold in-person classes on Tuesday due to winter weather conditions. Key examples include:

  • Tulsa Public Schools — All schools and district offices closed Tuesday; student activities canceled.
  • Norman Public Schools — Classes canceled for Tuesday because of icy road conditions.
  • Oklahoma City Public Schools — Schools closed Tuesday; students will not attend in person.
  • Putnam City Schools — Closed Tuesday, with activities canceled.
  • Mid-Del Schools (Midwest City-Del City) — Closed Tuesday; no in-person instruction.
  • Moore Public Schools — Closed Tuesday with all scheduled classes canceled.
  • Edmond Public Schools — Closed Tuesday; extracurricular activities canceled.

In metro and rural areas statewide, multiple smaller districts have also announced closures or virtual learning daysbecause of continuing snow, ice and cold. Most districts are sharing updates through official channels as conditions evolve.

Remote and Virtual Learning Plans

Some schools are offering distance or virtual learning in place of traditional classes for Tuesday:

  • Amber-Pocasset Public Schools — Virtual learning day.
  • Asher Public Schools — Virtual learning day.
  • Bridge Creek Public Schools — Virtual learning scheduled.
  • Canadian Public Schools — Virtual learning day planned.
  • Pittsburg Public Schools — Virtual learning option.
  • Ponca City Public Schools — Virtual learning day.

Many additional schools across the state have indicated similar online options in lieu of in-person classes to keep students engaged while avoiding travel.

College and Higher Education Closures

Beyond K-12 systems, at least one university has announced closures through Tuesday:

  • Southeastern Oklahoma State University — Closed through Jan. 27; essential services remain for residents, and some classes may proceed online.

Weather and Safety Context

The winter storm dropped significant snow across much of Oklahoma, leaving icy roads and below-freezing temperatures that have not fully abated. Meteorologists and emergency officials have warned that travel remains hazardous, especially on untreated secondary and rural roads. These conditions underlie many school districts’ decisions to cancel or adapt in-person instruction for Tuesday.
