
PENNSYLVANIA — An investigation is underway after an inmate was found dead in his prison cell in Cumberland County, according to state officials.
The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections said James Campbell, 46, was found unresponsive in his cell at SCI Camp Hill on Sunday, Jan. 25. The prison is located along Lisburn Road in Lower Allen Township.
Prison staff and facility medical personnel attempted life-saving measures, but Campbell was pronounced dead at approximately 1:30 p.m., officials said.
Authorities said Campbell was serving a life sentence for murder in Delaware County and had been housed at SCI Camp Hill since Oct. 17, 2023.
The Pennsylvania State Police are conducting the investigation into the incident. The cause and manner of death will be determined by the Cumberland County Coroner’s Office.
No additional details have been released at this time.
