KENTUCKY — A major winter storm sweeping through Kentucky has forced numerous school districts, colleges and universities to cancel in-person classes and adjust schedules for Monday, January 26, 2026, amid hazardous travel conditions, heavy snow and ice across much of the state.

In Louisville and surrounding areasJefferson County Public Schools — the state’s largest district — has declared traditional snow days for both Monday and Tuesday, meaning no in-person instruction or online classes are scheduled for those days. All extracurricular activities and athletics have also been canceled.

Other districts across the state are also adjusting schedules: Muhlenberg County Public Schools will be closed through Wednesday, and colleges in the region — including Bellarmine University — have canceled Monday classes due to the winter weather.

Higher education institutions statewide are impacted as well. Western Kentucky University has canceled classes and closed its campuses Monday and Tuesday due to the storm, and the University of Kentucky announced it will cancel all in-person classes Monday in response to inclement weather.

At Fort Campbell, Department of Defense Education Activity (DODEA) schools will be closed Monday because of icy roadways and extreme cold, with all after-school activities also canceled.

Officials continue to urge families to check directly with local districts for the latest updates, as weather conditions and travel hazards could lead to additional changes later in the week.
