GEORGIA — Dangerous winter conditions tied to a major ice and freezing rain storm have prompted school closures and shifts to remote instruction across large parts of Georgia for Monday, January 26, 2026 as travel conditions remain hazardous and temperatures plunge. State emergency officials and local districts have emphasized safety amid reports of icy roads and widespread power outages.

In metro Atlanta and north Georgia, multiple major school systems announced closures for Monday. Cobb County schools confirmed all campuses and programs will be closed Monday, including extracurricular activities and athletic events. DeKalb County has also indicated closure for the day, and other districts in the region are expected to make similar announcements.

Across the region, college and university operations have also been adjusted. Institutions including Clark Atlanta University, Georgia Tech, Emory University, Georgia Gwinnett College, Kennesaw State University and the University of Georgia in Athens are closed or conducting remote learning Monday as a precaution.

In central and southeast Georgia, districts are making similar decisions. Newton County Schools announced all schools and district offices will be closed Monday due to inclement weather, with officials encouraging families to take appropriate safety precautions. Forsyth County Schools will observe an online learning day Monday, with in-person facilities closed and all activities canceled.

Winter weather effects are being felt statewide. In southwest Georgia, Southwest Georgia Stem Charter School announced closures Monday as a precaution following severe storms that hit the region Sunday.

Officials continue to closely monitor conditions and urge families to check with their local districts for the most current information, as decisions on closures or remote learning for later in the week will be determined based on evolving weather and travel conditions.
