TEXAS — Severe winter weather has forced widespread school closures across much of Texas Monday as a powerful Arctic blast brings freezing temperatures, icy roads and hazardous travel conditions.
Across the state, numerous public school districts, charter schools and universities canceled classes and shut campuses for safety reasons.
In Southeast Texas and the Houston area, all public school districts announced closures for Monday. That includes major systems such as Houston ISD, Cy-Fair ISD, Katy ISD and Fort Bend ISD, among others. District officials also canceled extracurricular activities and after-school programs, emphasizing safety amid subfreezing weather and slick roadways.
In Central Texas and the Hill Country, multiple districts including Bandera, Comal, Hays, Kerrville, New Braunfels, San Marcos and Seguin ISDs canceled classes Monday, citing icy conditions and dangerous travel. Some districts announced schedule adjustments, including delayed starts for upcoming days pending weather developments.
In the San Antonio area, a wide range of districts and institutions closed for Monday. San Antonio ISD, Northside ISD, Judson ISD, North East ISD and dozens of other school systems canceled classes and district operations, and many also called off athletic events and other activities. Colleges such as UT San Antonio and Texas A&M University-San Antonio also shut down campuses for the day.
Not all districts are closed, however. In the San Antonio region, Poteet ISD, Jourdanton ISD and Pleasanton ISD opted to remain open despite an Extreme Cold Warning, drawing mixed reactions from local families over safety concerns.
In West Texas, Midland Independent School District announced it will also be closed Monday because of hazardous road and weather conditions, with makeup days scheduled later in the school year.
State meteorologists have issued multiple winter weather and extreme cold warnings as the storm system continues to impact travel and infrastructure. Officials urged families to monitor local district communications for the most up-to-date closure information and to stay off icy roads when possible.
