OHIO — Widespread winter weather continues to impact Ohio, prompting multiple county sheriffs to declare snow emergencies across the state as road conditions deteriorate and travel becomes increasingly dangerous.
As of Monday, several counties have been placed under Level 3 snow emergencies, the most serious designation under Ohio’s snow emergency system. Counties currently at Level 3 include Franklin, Erie, Huron, Ottawa, Belmont, and Jefferson counties.
A Level 3 snow emergency means all roadways are closed to non-emergency travel. Only essential travel is permitted, such as trips by emergency responders, healthcare workers, or individuals facing a true emergency. Under Ohio law, motorists who choose to drive without a valid emergency reason can be arrested or charged with a misdemeanor, particularly if their driving creates a hazard or interferes with emergency operations. Sheriffs emphasize that these restrictions are enforced to protect both the public and first responders.
In addition to Level 3 declarations, several counties are operating under Level 2 snow emergencies, where travel is strongly discouraged unless absolutely necessary. Counties currently at Level 2 include Cuyahoga, Lucas, Wood, Auglaize, Mercer, Montgomery, and Preble counties. Under a Level 2 designation, roads are considered hazardous due to snow, ice, or drifting, and authorities urge drivers to stay off the roads if possible.
A small number of counties remain under Level 1 snow emergencies, which advise drivers to use caution as roadways may be slick or partially covered, but no formal travel restrictions are in place.
Ohio’s snow emergency system is determined by county sheriffs and can change quickly as weather conditions evolve. Officials urge residents to monitor local alerts, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay off the roads in Level 3 counties to allow snowplows and emergency crews to operate safely.
Motorists are encouraged to check their county sheriff’s office or local emergency management agency for the most up-to-date information before traveling.
