TENNESSEE — One person was killed and more than a dozen others were injured Saturday as winter weather contributed to numerous crashes across Tennessee, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
THP Lieutenant Bill Miller said troopers responded to more than 160 vehicle-related incidents statewide by Saturday, resulting in 18 injuries and one fatal crash. In addition to crashes involving injuries or fatalities, troopers also worked 34 incidents that caused property damage.
Lieutenant Miller said hazardous road conditions played a major role in the crashes, with black ice posing the greatest danger to drivers. Black ice is difficult to see and can cause drivers to lose control with little warning.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol urged motorists to use extreme caution while traveling, especially during periods of freezing temperatures, and to avoid unnecessary travel when road conditions are hazardous.
