NORTH CAROLINA — Several thousand customers across North Carolina are without electricity as winter weather continues to impact parts of the region.
According to PowerOutage.us, 7,924 homes and businesses are currently without power statewide, representing 0.14% of the 5,867,778 customers tracked. North Carolina currently ranks eighth in the nation for total power outages and 15th nationwide for the percentage of customers affected.
Outages are most heavily concentrated in Transylvania County, where 3,324 customers are without electricity. By percentage, Transylvania County is the hardest hit area in the state, with 13.72% of customers affected.
Among the 98 utilities tracked statewide, Duke Energy reports the largest number of outages, with 3,963 customers without power. Haywood EMC has the highest percentage of customers impacted, with 10.33% of its customers currently without electricity.
Utility officials say crews are continuing restoration efforts as conditions allow. While overall outage numbers remain relatively low compared to harder-hit states, officials caution that additional outages are possible as icy conditions and falling tree limbs continue to pose risks to power lines in western parts of the state.
