INDIANA — A suspect was taken into custody Saturday morning after leading police on a high-speed chase that began in Fortville and ended on Indianapolis’ near east side, according to the Lawrence Police Department.

Police said the incident began around 5:30 a.m. on Jan. 24 when an officer clocked a Subaru traveling 95 mph westbound on U.S. 36 in Fortville. The officer reported seeing the vehicle move into an oncoming lane to pass a semi. When the officer activated emergency lights and sirens, the Subaru continued to flee at a high rate of speed.

Dispatch later advised that Fortville officers were pursuing a Subaru traveling up to 105 mph westbound on Pendleton Pike. Lawrence police said officers deployed spike strips on Pendleton Pike, which the Subaru struck, causing it to slow down.

Police said the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department also assisted by setting up an additional set of spike strips, which the vehicle struck as well. The pursuit ended when the Subaru slowed and was boxed in near the 3100 block of Mass Avenue, close to North Rural Street and East 21st Street.

According to police, the Subaru struck a Lawrence Police Department vehicle at the termination point, causing minor damage. The male driver was apprehended and the vehicle was towed from the scene.

Emergency medical services were called to evaluate the suspect before he was transported to the Community Justice Campus. The extent of any injuries was not immediately known.
