TEXAS — As a major winter storm moves into the state, school districts across Texas have announced a range of closures, early dismissals, and activity cancellations for Friday, January 23, 2026, due to hazardous winter weather conditions and forecasts calling for snow, ice, and dangerously low temperatures.

In the Permian Basin and West TexasLubbock ISD has canceled all classes and closed administrative offices for Friday. The district also announced that meals will be provided to students at several high schools between 10–11 a.m. for families who need them.

Across central and northern parts of the state, numerous smaller districts are adjusting schedules. Hamlin Collegiate ISDwill release students early at noon, while Eastland ISD, Vernon ISD, Northside ISD, and Seymour ISD have announced full closures for Friday. Several other districts, including Albany ISD, Blackwell CISD, Rule ISD, Baird ISD, Ranger ISD, Olney ISD, Benjamin ISD, and others, will dismiss students early, with times varying between roughly 12:00 p.m. and 1:15 p.m. depending on the district.

Snyder ISD has scheduled staggered early release times for different grade levels, with the earliest dismissal at 11:00 a.m. for Pre-K and the latest at 12:00 p.m. for junior high and high school students.

In the Dallas-Fort Worth area, while not all districts have announced closures yet, many—including Frisco ISD and Dallas ISD—have canceled after-school activities and athletic events Friday and over the weekend in anticipation of slick and dangerous conditions as the storm arrives. Other North Texas districts are monitoring forecasts and cautioning families that schedule changes may still occur.

With winter storm watches and warnings issued by the National Weather Service for much of Texas from Friday into the weekend, school officials continue to update families and staff throughout the day and have urged caution on the roads and attention to local communications as conditions evolve.
