Multiple schools in Arkansas announce closures and dismissals for Friday

ARKANSAS — With a significant winter storm expected to impact much of the state beginning Friday, January 23, 2026, several school districts and educational institutions across Arkansas are altering schedules, closing schools, or preparing for hazardous conditions. A state of emergency has been declared by Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders in anticipation of heavy snow, sleet, ice, and dangerously cold temperatures expected through the weekend.

As winter weather moves into the region, officials are closely monitoring conditions that could affect student safety and transportation. At this time, official announcements from many districts are still being finalized, but preparations are underway statewide.

In Arkadelphia and Clark County, for example, local administrators are already planning for an early dismissal on Friday, with some schools expected to release students ahead of worsening conditions. An early dismissal plan is intended to ensure students are home before roads become slick with ice and snow.

University campuses and higher-education facilities also are altering operations. Henderson State University offices and classes will be closed beginning Friday and remain closed through Monday, January 26.

Weather officials warn that travel could become dangerous late Friday into Saturday, and communities are urged to stay updated on road conditions and school communications. The storm system represents one of the most significant winter weather threats the state has faced this season, prompting proactive decisions to keep students and staff safe.
