Multiple inches of snow possible across Pennsylvania this weekend

PENNSYLVANIA — The National Weather Service says confidence is increasing that a winter storm could affect parts of Pennsylvania late Sunday into early Monday, with the greatest potential impacts focused on western and southwestern portions of the state, especially areas southeast of Pittsburgh.

According to the National Weather Service Pittsburgh office, snow is expected to be the primary precipitation typewith this system.

Forecast guidance indicates that Sunday will likely be the main day for snowfall, with peak accumulations favored during daylight hours. While snow is expected across a broader region, the highest impacts are most likely to occur in counties southeast of Pittsburgh, where the probability of moderate winter storm impacts is highest.

The National Weather Service graphic shows moderate-impact probabilities exceeding 70 to 90 percent across parts of southwestern Pennsylvania, including areas near Pittsburgh, Washington, and toward the West Virginia border. Moderate impacts are defined as hazardous driving conditions, disruptions to daily activities, and possible closures or infrastructure disruptions.

Forecasters caution that there is still uncertainty in the exact track of the low-pressure system, which means there is a wide range of possible snowfall totals. If the storm track shifts farther north, higher snowfall amounts would be possible. A more southern track would result in lower snowfall totals. Because of this variability, officials stress that residents should closely monitor forecast updates as the weekend approaches.

Lighter impacts are expected farther north and west, while the greatest concern remains focused on southern and southeastern portions of the forecast area. The National Weather Service advises residents to remain weather-aware and prepare for potentially hazardous travel conditions late Sunday and early Monday.
