Schools across Ohio announce closures for Tuesday

OHIO — Schools across Ohio are announcing closures for Tuesday, January 20, 2026, as an Arctic air mass brings dangerously cold temperatures and wind chill values well below zero.

Officials in the Miami Valley confirmed that Dayton Public Schools will be closed Tuesday morning due to “extremely cold temperatures and negative wind chill” expected early in the day.

In Northeast Ohio, several districts have already canceled classes for Tuesday as plummeting temperatures and bitter wind chills are forecast to make travel and waiting at bus stops unsafe. Schools in Canton, Mentor, Lorain, Parma, and Avon, among others, are listed as closed by local weather services responding to the cold air threat.

Other districts such as Plain Local Schools have also announced closures due to the extreme cold expected Tuesday.

The National Weather Service and local meteorologists have issued cold weather advisories across much of Ohio, warning that wind chill values could drop to as low as 15 below zero, particularly in the morning hours. This has prompted school officials to take precautions to protect students from the impact of frigid conditions on waiting for buses and traveling to and from school.

Families are urged to monitor local school district communications for any updates on additional closures or delays Tuesday as the cold air persists.
