VIRGINIA — A 6-year-old boy was killed Sunday evening following a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 64 East in Henrico County, according to Virginia State Police.
State police said the crash occurred at about 8:18 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 18, on I-64 East near the Nine Mile Road exit. An initial investigation determined that a vehicle traveling eastbound lost control while the driver was using a phone. That vehicle spun in the roadway and struck the center guardrail.
Police said a second vehicle traveling behind the first attempted to avoid the crash but lost control. That vehicle left the roadway, went through a guardrail, traveled down an embankment, and struck a tree.
Authorities said a 6-year-old boy was seated in the rear of the second vehicle and was not wearing a seatbelt. Police said the child was partially ejected through the rear passenger-side window. He was pronounced dead at the scene due to his injuries.
The driver of the second vehicle was not injured. State police said the crash remains under investigation.
