INDIANA — At least one person has been detained and multiple police officers have been placed on administrative leave following an early morning police chase that ended in a crash in Mishawaka.
According to the St. Joseph County Police Department, officers were called to the 13000 block of State Road 23 after reports of a suspicious vehicle and a possible attempted burglary. When officers arrived, police said the suspect vehicle fled the scene, leading officers on a pursuit.
Authorities said the chase ended when the suspect vehicle crashed into another vehicle near the intersection of State Road 23 and Gumwood Road. Police said the suspect then attempted to run away but was later detained. The individual was taken to a hospital for treatment before being transported to jail. The person has not been identified.
Several officers were injured during the incident, but police said all are expected to recover.
St. Joseph County officials said two officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. Police did not specify the reason for the leave but said the Mishawaka Police Department is leading the investigation. Once complete, the case will be forwarded to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
The St. Joseph County Police Department said it will also conduct an internal investigation into the officers’ actions in accordance with department policy, procedures, and training.
State Road 23 was closed for several hours between Gumwood Road and the entrance to Heritage Square due to the investigation but has since reopened.
