Schools in Kentucky could close multiple days next week

KENTUCKY — Bitterly cold temperatures are expected to grip eastern Kentucky over the next several days, raising the possibility of school delays or closures as dangerously cold conditions settle into the region.

According to the National Weather Service, daytime high temperatures are forecast to struggle to rise above freezing through at least Tuesday. Highs are expected to range mainly from the upper 20s to lower 30s, while overnight low temperatures will plunge into the teens and single digits. The coldest night is expected Monday night, when lows could fall into the single digits across much of eastern Kentucky.

Wind chills will make conditions feel even colder. Forecast graphics show minimum wind chill values dipping into the single digits and, in some locations, near or below zero late Monday night into early Tuesday morning. These conditions can pose a safety risk for students waiting at bus stops and for school transportation during early morning hours.

Dry weather is expected through Tuesday, but the prolonged cold alone could impact school operations. Districts may consider delays, remote learning days, or closures if wind chills reach dangerously low levels or if heating and transportation concerns arise.

Temperatures are expected to moderate on Wednesday, with highs climbing into the 40s ahead of the next storm system, which could bring precipitation later that evening. Parents and students are encouraged to closely monitor announcements from local school districts and take precautions against the cold, including dressing in layers and limiting time outdoors.
