Multiple inches of snow possible across Michigan Monday

MICHIGAN — A period of very cold and snowy weather is expected to impact much of Michigan through Monday, with hazardous travel conditions developing overnight, according to the National Weather Service.

Light snow that began Sunday is expected to become heavier tonight and continue into Monday. Total snowfall through Monday will vary by location, with accumulations of about 1 to 2 inches expected near Lansing and other inland areas. Higher totals are forecast closer to Lake Michigan, where communities along the lakeshore, including areas near Muskegon, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo and St. Joseph, could see between 5 and 8 inches of snow.

Snowfall amounts today are expected to range from 1 to 2 inches west of U.S. 131, with a trace to around 1 inch east of U.S. 131. Additional snowfall tonight and Monday will bring the higher totals, especially in western Michigan.

Northwest winds gusting up to 35 mph on Monday are expected to cause widespread blowing and drifting snow, further reducing visibility and making travel difficult. Officials warn that hazardous travel conditions could persist tonight through Monday.

Very cold air will move in behind the snow, with wind chill values expected to range from minus 5 to minus 15 degrees Monday into Tuesday. Drivers are urged to use caution, allow extra travel time, and stay updated on changing weather conditions.
