Snowfall possible in parts of Florida this weekend

FLORIDA — Parts of north Florida and the Florida Panhandle could see a brief period of wintry weather early Sunday morning, though forecasters say the chances for measurable snow remain low and impacts are expected to be minimal.

According to the National Weather Service Tallahassee, rain is expected to develop Saturday evening and continue into early Sunday. As colder air moves into the region overnight, the rain could transition to a rain-and-snow mix or, in some locations, briefly change to all snow early Sunday morning.

Forecasters said there is a low to medium chance, estimated between 20 and 30 percent, of measurable snow Sunday morning. The best chance for any snow to occur appears to be across portions of southwest Georgia and nearby areas of the Florida Panhandle. However, warm surface temperatures and the short duration of the wintry precipitation are expected to limit accumulations.

If snow is able to accumulate, amounts would likely range from a trace to around one-half inch at most, according to the forecast graphic released early Friday morning. Meteorologists emphasized that this is a highly conditional, “thread the needle” type of event, meaning several factors would need to align for accumulating snow to occur.

Officials stressed that this system is not expected to produce anything close to the snow event experienced last January. Residents are encouraged to stay informed as forecasts are updated and confidence increases ahead of Sunday morning.
