Virginia school closings and delays for Friday

VIRGINIA — Several school divisions and education-related agencies across southwest and western Virginia will operate on delayed schedules Friday, January 16, 2026, as lingering winter weather conditions continue to affect the region. Officials say the delays are intended to allow additional time for road treatment and safer travel for buses, staff, and students.

The following Virginia school divisions will open two hours late Friday: Bland County Public SchoolsCraig County Public SchoolsGiles County Public SchoolsGrayson County Public SchoolsHighland County Public Schools, and Tazewell County Public Schools.

In far southwest Virginia, Dickenson County Public SchoolsLee County Public SchoolsRussell County Public SchoolsScott County Public Schools, and Wise County Public Schools will also operate on a two-hour delay.

Norton City Public Schools will open two hours late and utilize alternate bus routes, with officials directing families to the district’s app or website for transportation details. Wise County Christian School will also open two hours late.

In addition, Scott County Early Head Start and Southwest Virginia Community College will open two hours late. The Russell County Department of Social Services will open at 10 a.m.
