OHIO — The Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) has released details about a fatal crash involving three vehicles on Interstate 71 near the Tanger Outlets on Sunday evening.
The crash occurred at approximately 5 p.m. in Berkshire Township, near the U.S.-36/State Route 37 exit.
According to OSHP, a black Hyundai Tucson driven by Michael Duncan, 35, was traveling northbound when it veered across the median, overturned, struck the median cable barrier, and collided head-on with a Chevrolet Silverado heading south.
Duncan, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two passengers in the Hyundai—a 38-year-old woman and a 10-year-old girl—suffered serious injuries and were hospitalized.
The driver and passenger of the Chevrolet were also hospitalized with serious injuries.
A Toyota Tacoma traveling southbound was struck by debris from the crash. The driver and passenger in the Tacoma sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene.
The crash forced the closure of all southbound lanes of I-71 for approximately three hours as emergency crews worked to clear the scene.
The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, Delaware Fire & EMS, BST&G Fire and EMS, and the Ohio Department of Transportation assisted with the response.
Investigators have not yet determined what caused Duncan to lose control of his vehicle. OSHP noted that all other individuals involved in the crash were wearing seatbelts.
The investigation remains ongoing.
