LOS ANGELES — Officials have announced that at least 20 individuals have been arrested on suspicion of looting in evacuation zones as wildfires continue to devastate Los Angeles County.

L.A. County Supervisor Kathryn Barger addressed the arrests during a news conference on Thursday, expressing outrage at those exploiting the crisis.

“I promise you, you will be held accountable,” Barger said. “Shame on those who are preying on our residents during this time of crisis.”

Sheriff Robert Luna confirmed that deputies have intensified efforts to prevent further criminal activity in affected areas.

“I’m gonna make this crystal clear to everybody out there: Over last night and this morning, we are up to 20 individuals who chose to go into our area and deprive these poor people who have been through so much of their property,” Luna said.

The Sheriff’s Department is conducting roving patrols, monitoring road closures, and providing security to deter looters and protect evacuees’ belongings.

Authorities have pledged to maintain a strong presence in evacuation zones as the wildfires continue to pose significant threats.
