NORTH CAROLINA — Law enforcement agencies in North Carolina are searching for an armed man accused of shooting a woman Monday, according to the Rockingham County and Stokes County sheriff’s offices.
Deputies with the Stokes County Sheriff’s Office said they were called just before noon to the 1000 block of Poplar Spring Road in Stokes County following a report of a shooting. Stokes County Sheriff Joey Lemons said a family member transported the victim to a hospital. Her condition was not immediately available.
Investigators identified the suspect as Thomas Sharp Jr., 50. Authorities said Sharp left the area in a 2016 silver Chevrolet Silverado bearing North Carolina license plate VAN-2265.
Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office Sheriff Sam Page said Sharp was last seen on surveillance video near Lindsay Bridge Road in Madison. Officials said a statewide “be on the lookout” alert has been issued for the vehicle in both North Carolina and Virginia.
Authorities warned that Sharp is considered armed and dangerous. Anyone who sees the vehicle is advised not to approach it and to call 911 immediately.
Multiple agencies are assisting in the search, including the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, King Police Department, Eden Police Department, the FBI, the SBI, North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement, and emergency medical services, among others.
Officials said the Rockingham County and Stokes County school districts were notified of the situation, but no lockdowns were ordered. Investigators have not released information about what led to the shooting.
