Three inmates dead, 13 injured following incident at Georgia prison

GEORGIA — An incident at a Georgia state prison on Sunday left three inmates dead and at least 13 others injured, including a correctional officer, according to local authorities.

Joel Cochran, sheriff of Washington County Sheriff’s Office, said his office responded to the prison to assist with securing the perimeter following the incident. Details about what led to the disturbance were not immediately released.

The deaths of three inmates were confirmed by Paul Hodges, coroner for Washington County. The identities of the inmates who died have not been made public.

Sheriff Cochran said at least 12 inmates and one correctional officer were transported out of the prison for medical treatment. The severity of their injuries has not been disclosed.

Multiple agencies responded to assist, including the Georgia State Patrol, the Davisboro Police Department, and the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident remains under investigation, and authorities said additional information will be released as it becomes available.
