INDIANA — A man is in custody after a dispute over leftovers escalated into an alleged armed robbery Friday night on Indianapolis’ near east side, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
Police said officers were called just after 8 p.m. on Jan. 9 to Community North Hospital for a report of a robbery with injuries that occurred in the 800 block of North Gray Street near East Michigan Street.
IMPD detectives determined that earlier in the day there had been a verbal argument between the victim and another man over a takeout meal. Investigators said the dispute later turned violent when the suspect allegedly assaulted the victim with a mini baseball bat and fired a shot in his direction. Police said the victim lost consciousness during the assault, and the suspect then stole his cell phone and keys.
During the investigation, detectives learned the suspect was already on GPS monitoring in connection with another case. Officers used that information to locate him.
Police later found the suspect riding a bicycle, with what officers believed to be a handgun visible in his pocket. IMPD said the man initially complied with commands but then resisted when officers attempted to place him in handcuffs. Officers used a Taser to take him into custody.
The suspect was arrested on preliminary charges of armed robbery, kidnapping, possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, and criminal recklessness. The case remains under investigation.
