NORTH CAROLINA — Two Marion residents are facing multiple felony charges after authorities said a large quantity of fentanyl was recovered during a traffic stop earlier this month.
According to the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office, deputies conducted a traffic stop on Jan. 4, 2026, for a traffic violation. The vehicle was driven by Patrick Ryan Poteat, 34, and occupied by Amanda Dawn Boone, 31.
Authorities said a K-9 officer and deputies searched the vehicle and discovered 12.71 grams of fentanyl. Boone is also accused of possessing drug paraphernalia.
Both Boone and Poteat face several felony charges, including possession of a Schedule II controlled substance, two counts of trafficking in fentanyl, maintaining a vehicle, dwelling, or place for a controlled substance, and possession with intent to manufacture, sell, or deliver a Schedule II controlled substance.
In a written statement, Ricky T. Buchanan said the seizure highlights the importance of proactive enforcement efforts. “Removing fentanyl from our streets saves lives,” Buchanan said. “Every seizure like this protects families and prevents another potential overdose in our community.”
The sheriff’s office reported that Boone and Poteat were each issued secured bonds set at $240,000. The case remains under investigation.
