PENNSYLVANIA — A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for parts of eastern Pennsylvania, with freezing rain expected to impact Monroe County later Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.
The advisory covers Monroe County, including the city of Stroudsburg, and is scheduled to be in effect from 7 p.m. Tuesday through 3 a.m. Wednesday. Forecasters said freezing rain is expected to produce a light glaze of ice, particularly in higher-elevation areas near and above 1,200 feet.
Officials warned that very slippery conditions are possible on sidewalks, roads, and bridges. Drivers are urged to slow down and use caution while traveling. Residents are also advised to prepare for the possibility of isolated power outages due to ice accumulation.
These conditions could lead to school delays or closures across Monroe County. Even a light glaze of ice can make early-morning travel hazardous for school buses, student drivers, and staff, especially on untreated secondary roads and elevated surfaces such as bridges and hills. Icy sidewalks and parking lots can also pose safety concerns for students arriving on foot.
School districts typically assess overnight ice accumulation, road conditions, and temperatures before deciding whether to delay or cancel classes. If freezing rain lingers into the early morning hours or refreezes after temperatures drop, districts may determine that travel conditions are unsafe.
Motorists can check the latest road conditions by calling 511. Officials encourage residents to monitor updates as conditions develop overnight.
