ILLINOIS — Two people were killed Tuesday morning in a crash on Interstate 55 in Sangamon County, according to the Illinois State Police.
State Police said the crash occurred around 6:40 a.m. at Milepost 92 near the exit to U.S. Route 36 in Springfield. A southbound passenger vehicle rear-ended a semi-truck, resulting in the deaths of two occupants of the passenger vehicle.
As a result of the crash, the southbound lanes of Interstate 55 were shut down. Traffic is being diverted off the highway at Stevenson Drive, approximately two miles north of the crash site.
No additional details about the victims or the cause of the crash were immediately released. The Illinois State Police continue to investigate the incident.
