PENNSYLVANIA — An investigation is underway after a knife assault at a Franklin County middle school left one student injured and another taken into custody Monday morning, according to the Chambersburg Area School District.

Police said officers responded to an incident at Chambersburg Area Middle School South on East McKinley Street during student arrivals. Monday marked the first day back to class following winter break.

In a statement released by the school district, officials said the incident involved two students and was broken up quickly. One student was injured with a knife and was described as responsive while receiving medical treatment. The other student was taken into custody. The identities of the students have not been released.

The district said the school was briefly placed under a shelter-in-place protocol as a precaution. Students were later released to their classrooms, and classes resumed. Additional counselors and district staff were brought in to support students and staff affected by the incident.

The Chambersburg Police Department said the school is secure and there is no ongoing threat to the facility.
