GEORGIA — A crash involving a semi-truck has shut down lanes of Interstate 16 in Savannah, causing traffic disruptions Tuesday morning, according to authorities.

The Savannah Police Department reported that lanes are closed on I-16 near Exit 166 due to an accident. In a social media post, police said traffic is being diverted onto the 37th Street connector and urged drivers to seek alternate routes.

Footage from the Georgia Department of Transportation shows what appears to be a collapsed road sign at the scene, along with fire extinguishers being used on a vehicle.

The Savannah Fire confirmed that a semi-truck overturned and caught fire. Fire officials said the eastbound lanes of I-16 are closed near the Exit 165 and 37th Street connector while crews respond to the incident.

According to Chatham County EMS, at least one person was transported from the scene for medical treatment. No further information on injuries has been released.

Officials initially estimated the roadway would reopen between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. However, as of 10:48 a.m., GDOT updated the anticipated end time for the closure to 12:30 p.m. Motorists are advised to continue avoiding the area until the roadway is fully reopened.
