Multiple schools in Wisconsin could close Monday

WISCONSIN — Snow and icy conditions expected late Sunday through early Monday could lead to school delays or closures across parts of Wisconsin, particularly in northern and northeastern areas.

The National Weather Service says accumulating snow is likely from late Sunday afternoon through Sunday night, with the highest impacts north of a Wausau-to-Manitowoc line. In those areas, there is a 40 to 70 percent chance of at least 2 inches of snow. Even modest snowfall amounts can create hazardous conditions when combined with cold temperatures and untreated roads.

Forecasters also warn that freezing drizzle may develop early Monday morning after the snow tapers off. This could result in a thin glaze of ice on roads, sidewalks, parking lots, and school bus routes. Ice glazing, even when minor, can significantly increase the risk of accidents during the early morning hours.

Because school transportation relies heavily on safe road conditions, districts often consider closures or delays when snow-covered or icy roads are expected during the morning commute. Rural routes, bridges, and hills are especially vulnerable to slick conditions, and visibility may also be reduced during periods of snowfall.

School officials typically monitor weather forecasts, road conditions, and guidance from transportation departments before making decisions. With snow and possible ice coinciding with the Monday morning commute, some Wisconsin school districts may choose to delay start times or close altogether to ensure student and staff safety.
