Vehicle crash causes power outage in Ohio

OHIO — About 300 customers in New Castle remained without electricity as of 7:30 a.m. Saturday following a power outage that left nearly 6,000 customers in the dark Friday night.

According to FirstEnergy, the outage was caused by a vehicle crash near the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and Madonna Drive that damaged electrical equipment. Crews worked overnight to restore service, significantly reducing the number of affected customers.

FirstEnergy reported on its website that power is expected to be fully restored between 1 and 2 p.m. Saturday.

In response to the outage, New Castle Firefighters Local 160 announced in a social media post that George Washington School has opened as a warming center. The post stated that oxygen and nasal cannulas are available at the site for residents who need them.

New Castle Transit is operating on its normal routes to assist residents who need transportation to the warming center or other locations.

Officials encourage residents to use caution around downed lines and damaged equipment while restoration efforts continue.
