OHIO — A 27-year-old man was arrested following a reported domestic incident in Dayton on New Year’s Day, according to police.
Officers with the Dayton Police Department were called to the 1700 block of Gummer Avenue late Thursday morning to conduct a welfare check. Upon arrival, officers observed a 33-year-old woman with a black eye and a possible bloody nose, Dayton Police Lt. Randy Beane said Friday.
Police said a man inside the residence refused to allow officers to check on the woman’s welfare. A prior call to police indicated the man may have had access to a firearm. As officers surrounded the home, one officer saw the woman mouth the words “help me,” Beane said.
SWAT personnel were called to the scene. After they arrived, officers forced entry into the home and took the man into custody, allowing the woman to receive medical treatment.
During a search of the residence, officers located a firearm. Police said the suspect has a prior conviction for felonious assault on a police officer, which legally prohibits him from possessing a firearm.
Avery Carpenter, 27, was arrested at the scene and booked into the Montgomery County Jail. He is being held on charges of kidnapping, domestic violence, obstructing official business, and weapons under disability.
