U.S. Marshals arrest Ohio murder suspect

OHIO — The U.S. Marshals Service has arrested a second suspect in connection with an August 2024 shooting in Ohio that left one man dead and another seriously injured.

Shashawn Atkinson, 23, was taken into custody on February 14 by the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force (NOVFTF) at an address in the 2800 block of E. 124th Street in Cleveland.

Atkinson was wanted by the Cleveland Division of Police for aggravated murder.

The shooting occurred on August 3, 2024, when Cleveland police officers responded to a reported fight in the 1000 block of E. 72nd Street.

Upon arrival, officers found 22-year-old Anthony Williams with fatal gunshot wounds and 24-year-old Antwoine Sandford suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Authorities initially identified 24-year-old Jamelle Swanson as a suspect, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

On January 3, 2025, NOVFTF members arrested Swanson outside an apartment in the 10300 block of Miles Avenue in Cleveland.

Further investigation led to the identification of Atkinson as a second suspect, resulting in the warrant for his arrest.

“Outstanding work was done by the Cleveland Division of Police homicide unit on this investigation,” said U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott.

“Their investigation led to the identification of these suspects, and then our fugitive task force worked relentlessly to track down and arrest the second suspect today.”

Authorities encourage anyone with information on fugitives to contact the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force at 1-866-4WANTED (1-866-492-6833) or submit a web tip.

Tipsters may remain anonymous, and reward money is available.

The NOVFTF – Cleveland Division consists of multiple federal, state, and local agencies, including the U.S. Marshals Service, Cleveland Police Department, Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Office, Ohio State Highway Patrol, and several other law enforcement agencies.
