MISSISSIPPI — Two people were injured early Friday morning after a vehicle crash in the Powers community that also caused a power outage, authorities said.
The crash happened around 2:30 a.m. when a Ford Expedition went off the road and struck a three-phase Dixie Electric Power Association pole, snapping it before coming to rest in a nearby ditch.
According to emergency responders, the female driver was able to get out of the vehicle on her own but collapsed shortly afterward. She was breathing when help arrived. A male passenger was trapped inside and had to be extricated by a Powers firefighter and an EMServ Ambulance Service medic.
Both victims were taken by EMServ to South Central Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
The impact of the crash caused a power outage affecting several Dixie EPA customers in the area. Crews worked through the morning to restore service.
The Jones County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the cause of the crash. Volunteer fire and rescue units from Powers, M&M, Glade, and Sandersville assisted at the scene.
