MISSISSIPPI — Two Pafford EMS crew members were critically injured Friday night after an ambulance was involved in a head-on crash on Interstate 55 near Wesson, according to officials.

Pafford EMS said the ambulance was traveling northbound on I-55 with two crew members on board when it was struck head-on by a vehicle traveling southbound. Both crew members sustained critical injuries and were flown to the nearest trauma center for treatment.

The patient who was being transported in the ambulance was pronounced deceased at the scene, Pafford confirmed. Officials said they were unsure of the condition of the driver of the vehicle that struck the ambulance.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol is the lead agency investigating the crash.

Stephen Sutton, public information officer for Pafford EMS, issued a statement following the incident.

“As we navigate through this difficult time, we ask for your compassion and to join us in praying for everyone affected,” Sutton said. “Our top priority remains the safety and full recovery of our crew members, and we are committed to supporting them in every way possible during their recovery journey.”

Sutton also thanked first responders and assisting agencies, saying their support was invaluable in managing the scene.

The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
