MISSISSIPPI — Two people were killed and two others critically injured in a crash Wednesday morning involving a prisoner transport van and a utility truck on Interstate 10 in Jackson County.
According to the Mississippi Highway Patrol, the wreck occurred just before the ramp to Mississippi Highway 609 near the Ocean Springs Exit 50.
Troopers said the crash involved a utility truck and a prisoner transport van carrying four people. One person was in the utility truck. Authorities confirmed two fatalities and said two other individuals suffered critical injuries.
A medical helicopter transported one of the most seriously injured victims to a local hospital.
The Mississippi Department of Transportation reported that two westbound lanes of I-10 were closed following the crash, leaving only one lane open as of late morning. Officials estimated it could take about four hours to clear the scene.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said the transport van was traveling from Florida, though officials have not identified the agency involved.
Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Harrison County Sheriff’s Office and D’Iberville Police Department.
Drivers were urged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes as the investigation continues.
