Tornados possible in parts of Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA — The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center says parts of Oklahoma face an isolated tornado threat on Sunday as severe weather conditions develop across the southern Plains.

According to the Day 2 Convective Outlook issued early Saturday, portions of Oklahoma are included in a slight risk for severe thunderstorms, with forecasters noting the potential for large hail, damaging winds and a possible tornado.

Meteorologists say storms are expected to develop along a dryline extending through western Texas and Oklahoma as warm, moist air moves northward and atmospheric instability increases.

If storms form along this boundary late Sunday afternoon into the evening, forecasters say they could become supercell thunderstorms capable of producing large hail, strong winds and an isolated tornado.

The Storm Prediction Center has outlined a 2% tornado risk across parts of Oklahoma, meaning tornadoes are not expected to be widespread but remain possible where stronger storms form.

Forecasters note uncertainty regarding how many storms will develop, as earlier thunderstorms in the day could affect conditions later in the afternoon. However, any storms that do develop could pose a threat.

Residents are urged to stay weather aware Sunday, monitor forecasts and be prepared to take shelter if severe weather warnings are issued.
