Tornadoes possible in parts of Texas this week

TEXAS — Forecasters with the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center say parts of Texas could see severe thunderstorms, including a low-end tornado risk, on Saturday.

According to the agency’s Day 2 Convective Outlook issued Friday afternoon, areas of West Texas and the southern High Plains are under a slight risk for severe weather as conditions become favorable for storm development.

Meteorologists say increasing moisture and instability across the region are expected to lead to scattered thunderstorms by early to mid-afternoon Saturday. While overall wind shear is expected to remain relatively weak, forecasters note that a few storms could still become strong.

The primary threats in Texas include large hail and strong wind gusts, but an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out. The Storm Prediction Center places a 2% tornado risk across a broad portion of the region, indicating a low but non-zero chance of tornado development.

Storms are expected to become more organized later in the day and into the evening as atmospheric conditions evolve, potentially increasing the risk for damaging winds.

Officials urge residents across West Texas and nearby areas to stay weather-aware, monitor forecasts and have a plan in place in case warnings are issued.

Additional updates are expected as the forecast evolves.
