MISSISSIPPI — Hundreds of thousands of residents across Mississippi are without electricity as a major winter weather system continues to affect the region.
According to PowerOutage.us, 127,670 homes and businesses are currently without power statewide, representing 8.76% of the 1,458,083 customers tracked. Mississippi now ranks third in the nation for total power outages and first nationwide for the percentage of customers affected, indicating the severity of the situation.
Outages are most concentrated in Lafayette County, where 19,977 customers are without power. By percentage, Lafayette County is the hardest hit in the state, with 74.95% of customers affected, leaving much of the county without electricity.
Among utilities, North East Mississippi Electric Power Association reports the highest number of outages, with 24,722 customers without power. The utility also has the highest percentage of customers affected statewide, at 80.83%.
Utility officials warn that restoration efforts could take time as crews contend with icy conditions, fallen trees, and damaged power lines. Residents are urged to use caution, limit travel where possible, and follow safety guidance while crews work to restore service across the state.
