MISSISSIPPI — Authorities are investigating after a human skull and other skeletal remains were discovered near a popular walking and cycling trail in Pontotoc.
According to Pontotoc police, the remains were found Sunday afternoon near the Tanglefoot Trail, between West Eighth Street and Highway 15. Police Chief Bob Poe said a woman and her husband discovered the bones while riding a golf cart along the trail and notified authorities.
Officers responded to the scene and confirmed that a human skull and additional bones were present. The identity of the individual has not been determined.
Officials said the remains have been collected and will undergo forensic analysis to determine further details, including how long they may have been there.
As a precaution, authorities have temporarily closed the affected section of the Tanglefoot Trail while the investigation continues. Police have not released additional information at this time and said the investigation remains ongoing.
