SOUTH CAROLINA — The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is investigating a shooting at a Spartanburg County property involving a retired sheriff’s deputy.

Spartanburg County deputies responded to a call around 3 p.m. Monday at 662 Union Highway.

According to a preliminary investigation, two individuals came to the property attempting to steal items. The property owner, who had been monitoring security cameras, confronted the suspects.

A shooting occurred during the confrontation, though authorities have not released details about who fired the shots. One of the trespassers was shot and remains in critical condition at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

The other suspect, Robert Michael Liner II, was interviewed and charged with petit larceny.

Because a retired Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office deputy was involved in the shooting, the case has been referred to SLED for further investigation.
