MISSISSIPPI — December 30, 2025 — Schools across Mississippi will be closed on several days in January as students and staff observe national holidays, district officials confirm.

New Year’s Day Closure

All public schools in the state will be closed on Wednesday, January 1, 2026, in observance of New Year’s Day. Although this date falls during the holiday break for many districts, school calendars reflect the closure officially to mark the federal holiday.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Holiday

Schools will also be closed on Monday, January 19, 2026, in recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The observance honors the civil rights leader and is a day without classes throughout the state.

District administrators say these closures are in line with standard academic calendars and provide families and staff the opportunity to participate in holiday observances and community events. Schools are expected to resume regular class schedules on Tuesday, January 20, 2026 following the holiday.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to check with their local school districts for any additional calendar changes or professional development days that may affect student schedules.
