
MISSISSIPPI — A Lee County school resource officer was struck and killed Monday afternoon while directing traffic in front of Shannon Elementary School, authorities said.
Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson identified the deputy as 52-year-old Rick Haggard, the school resource officer assigned to the elementary school.
According to the sheriff, the crash involved two vehicles. Haggard was on foot directing traffic at the time of the incident and was not inside a patrol vehicle.
The crash occurred in front of Shannon Elementary School. No additional details about the vehicles or drivers involved were immediately released.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol and the Shannon Police Department are jointly investigating the incident.
