NORTH CAROLINA — One person was killed and two others were injured in a fiery crash on Interstate 40 West in Greensboro on Wednesday, according to police.

The crash occurred around 12:09 p.m. near Exit 208 at the Sandy Ridge Road off-ramp. Investigators said a Honda CR-V was traveling the wrong way on the ramp at a high rate of speed when it collided with two other vehicles.

Authorities said the impact caused two of the vehicles to catch fire. Emergency crews from the Greensboro Police Department, Greensboro Fire Department and Guilford County EMS responded to the scene, where traffic was diverted as firefighters worked to extinguish the flames.

Police said the driver of the Honda CR-V died at the scene. The drivers of the other two vehicles were transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The identity of the person who died has not been released.

The crash shut down all lanes of I-40 West in the area and caused significant traffic backups before the roadway was later reopened.

The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
