VIRGINIA — The George Washington Memorial Parkway was closed Thursday morning after a fatal crash in Arlington.
Authorities said the crash occurred shortly after 7:30 a.m. in the southbound lanes near Chain Bridge. Initial reports indicate that one driver died in the incident.
As a result of the crash, southbound traffic is being diverted onto Route 123 in McLean, while northbound traffic is being diverted onto Spout Run Parkway in Arlington.
The closures have caused heavy traffic on several nearby roads, including Route 123/Chain Bridge Road, North Glebe Road, Spout Run Parkway and Langston Boulevard.
Officials say the roadway is expected to remain closed for an extended period while police investigate the crash and crews work to clear the scene.
