NORTH CAROLINA — A 17-year-old boy has died following a shooting along a Halifax County highway, according to the sheriff’s office.

Sheriff Tyree Davis said deputies were called shortly before 8 p.m. Monday to a shooting on Highway 48 near Graham-Scott Road in the Roanoke Rapids area.

During the investigation, authorities learned the teen and another individual were walking along the highway when a vehicle stopped nearby. Officials said a person got out of the car and spoke with the two before gunfire erupted a short time later.

The 17-year-old was struck in the shooting and transported to ECU Health North Hospital, where he died during surgery.

Investigators are working to identify and locate the second individual who was with the teen at the time of the shooting.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office or Crime Stoppers.

The investigation remains ongoing.
